“Leased” scammers stepped up in Ukraine

As told the publication “Today” in the National Police, for three summer months only in the southern areas recorded hundreds of cases of deceit wanting to rent housing. Also from scammers suffer vacationers at the resorts of the western regions.

Policemen pay attention to the fact that the principle of work of scammers is simple and designed for non-vigilant holidaymakers. Scammers advertise on the Internet on the delivery of housing and require an advance payment. After receiving an advance on the bank card, scammers disappear, disconnecting telephone communication with the tenant.

“In the Odessa region, as in other southern regions, many such cases were recorded during the summer, many among the affected citizens of Belarus and Moldova,” said the head of the Odessa regional police, Dmitry Golovin.

The Department of Cyberpolicy told that recently was detained 37-year-old resident of Chernivtsi, on account of which 30 deceived dwellers. “The scheme was as follows: a man published on the Internet ads on the delivery of cottages for the New Year holidays. For the reservation, citizens were required to transfer to the bank card 2500 UAH.When the lodgers came to the address indicated by the fraudster, it turned out that there was nothing rented. way attacker lured citizens of about 200 thousand hryvnia “, – said Chernovtsy cyberpolicies.

The investigators opened criminal proceedings under the article “Fraud”, the suspect faces from three to eight years in prison.

The head of the Department of Cyber Police of Ukraine, Sergey Demedyuk, said that the investigation of the scam took more than six months. According to him, the swindler took measures of conspiracy: bank cards, for which money was received for “renting”, were registered with dummies. As a rule, scammers register such cards on homeless people, who buy passport data. It was possible to calculate the location of the attacker by geolocation.

The police urged tenants to be vigilant and recheck the decency of the landlord. As the tourists with experience told, this year the trend was the advertising of non-existent housing in an original way.

“For example, some ads about renting a house in Western Ukraine contain photos … of foreign hotel rooms, the author of the ad is primitively stealing photos from foreign websites. When I searched the Internet for housing offers in the Carpathians, I almost fell victim to a swindler who took an advance for non-existent housing, but advertised it with the help of photographs of the rooms of the Belarusian sanatorium, “said Karina from Kyiv.
